I did Blokarting recently and I absolutely loved every
moment of it. It is a cross between a go-kart and a yacht, on land. Sitting in
a kart, with sails to take you off, is quite an adrenaline rush. A blokart has
been clocked at over 90 kph (56 mph)! The more wind there is, the faster you
go.
You wear a helmet, strapped in tight, and use the rope
attached to the sail to use the wind. Ideal locations to experience this fun
activity include beaches, empty car parks or fields. It can even be done on ice
modified with skates instead of wheels.
There are companies worldwide who offer this exciting
activity or you can buy your very own blokart.

Only hands are needed for this land-sailing, so those who usually
get by in a wheelchair, can enjoy this thrill. It is a lot easier to
do than you would imagine it to be. Once the art of sailing the blokart is mastered,
people can start learning tricks.
The Blokart World Championship is attempted every 2 years by
both those abled or with physical disabilities. It is held at a different venue
each time, with the next one in 2016 being hosted in Las Vegas.
My blokart experience
I arrived on a very windy day, at Sunset beach in Muizenberg,
to try this out with my best friend. It is only a 15 minute drive from the
guest house here in Noordhoek. We were feeling nervous but excited. Within
minutes the nerves were replaced with pure adrenaline. We were off, going what
felt pretty fast, and were chased by the same small dog running as fast as its’
little legs could take it. My one wheel even went up in the air a few times
from the wind pummelling along the beach. I will definitely be doing this
again!
Go on, be daring and give it a go.
